Addiction Treatment in Los Angeles

Opening Paragraph

Addiction is a medical condition, not a moral failure. At LA Integrative Psychiatry in Burbank, we provide evidence-based addiction treatment including medication-assisted treatment (MAT), therapy, and long-term recovery support. Our practice is MATE-certified (Medication-Assisted Treatment for Addiction), and we accept most major insurance plans.

What Is MATE Certification?

MATE (Medication-Assisted Treatment for Addiction) certification means our providers have completed specialized training in treating substance use disorders with FDA-approved medications. This certification is required to prescribe certain addiction treatment medications like buprenorphine (Suboxone).

MATE-certified providers understand:

  • How addiction affects brain chemistry
  • Which medications work for different substances
  • How to combine medication with therapy for best outcomes
  • How to prevent relapse and support long-term recovery

Not all psychiatrists are certified to treat addiction. MATE certification ensures you’re receiving care from a provider who specializes in substance use disorders.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Medication-assisted treatment combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies. This approach treats substance use disorders and supports recovery.

MAT is proven to:

  • Reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms
  • Lower risk of relapse
  • Improve treatment retention
  • Decrease overdose deaths
  • Help patients return to work, school, and family life

Medications We Prescribe

For Opioid Use Disorder:

  • Buprenorphine (Suboxone) — reduces cravings and withdrawal without causing euphoria
  • Naltrexone (Vivitrol) — blocks opioid effects and reduces cravings

For Alcohol Use Disorder:

  • Naltrexone — reduces alcohol cravings and blocks rewarding effects
  • Acamprosate (Campral) — helps maintain abstinence by reducing withdrawal symptoms
  • Disulfiram (Antabuse) — causes unpleasant reaction if alcohol is consumed

For Nicotine Dependence:

  • Bupropion (Wellbutrin) — reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms
  • Varenicline (Chantix) — blocks nicotine receptors in the brain

Medication alone isn’t enough. We combine prescriptions with therapy to address the psychological and behavioral aspects of addiction.

Therapy for Addiction

Medication helps your brain chemistry stabilize. Therapy helps you develop skills to stay sober.

We offer:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps you identify triggers, challenge thoughts that lead to substance use, and develop healthier coping strategies. This is the most researched and effective therapy for addiction.

Motivational Interviewing

This therapy style helps you find your own reasons for change. Instead of being told what to do, you explore your values and how addiction conflicts with the life you want.

Relapse Prevention Planning

We create a detailed plan for high-risk situations: what to do when cravings hit, who to call, how to handle stress without substances.

Trauma-Informed Care

Many people with addiction have experienced trauma. We treat both conditions together, recognizing how past experiences affect current substance use.

Conditions We Treat

We treat substance use disorders involving:

  • Opioids — heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine
  • Alcohol — alcohol dependence, binge drinking, alcohol use disorder
  • Stimulants — cocaine, methamphetamine, prescription stimulants
  • Benzodiazepines — Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, Ativan
  • Cannabis — marijuana dependence, cannabis use disorder
  • Nicotine — cigarette smoking, vaping, tobacco dependence

We also treat co-occurring mental health conditions common with addiction:

  • Depression — substance use often masks or worsens depression
  • Anxiety — many people use substances to self-medicate anxiety
  • ADHD — untreated ADHD increases addiction risk
  • Bipolar disorder — mood instability can trigger substance use
  • OCD — obsessive thoughts can fuel compulsive substance use

Treating mental health conditions alongside addiction improves recovery outcomes.

What to Expect: First Appointment

Your first visit lasts 60-90 minutes. This isn’t a quick intake form. We want to understand your full story.

We’ll Discuss:

  • Substance use history (what, how much, how long)
  • Past treatment attempts and what happened
  • Medical history and current medications
  • Mental health symptoms (depression, anxiety, trauma)
  • Family history of addiction or mental illness
  • Current life circumstances (housing, employment, relationships)
  • Your goals for treatment

Assessment Includes:

  • Withdrawal risk evaluation
  • Medical complications from substance use
  • Co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Motivation and readiness for change

You’ll Leave With:

  • Clear treatment plan
  • Prescription for medication (if appropriate)
  • Therapy schedule
  • Emergency contact information
  • Resources for support groups

Does Insurance Cover Addiction Treatment?

Yes. The Mental Health Parity Act requires insurance companies to cover addiction treatment the same way they cover other medical conditions.

We accept most major insurance plans including:

  • Anthem Blue Cross
  • Aetna
  • Cigna
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • Medicare

Call our office at (747) 777-7047 with your insurance information. We’ll verify your coverage before your first appointment and explain any out-of-pocket costs.

If you don’t have insurance, we offer self-pay options and can discuss payment plans.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

There’s no fixed timeline. Addiction is a chronic condition that requires ongoing management, similar to diabetes or high blood pressure.

Typical Timeline:

Weeks 1-4: Stabilization

  • Start medication
  • Weekly therapy appointments
  • Manage withdrawal symptoms
  • Build support system

Months 2-6: Early Recovery

  • Continue medication
  • Bi-weekly or monthly appointments
  • Address co-occurring mental health issues
  • Develop relapse prevention skills

Months 6+: Maintenance

  • Monthly medication management
  • Therapy as needed
  • Long-term recovery support
  • Gradual medication tapering (if appropriate)

Some patients stay on medication long-term. That’s medically appropriate and improves outcomes. There’s no shame in long-term treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to stop using substances before starting treatment?

No. We meet you where you are. Medication-assisted treatment can start while you’re still using. The goal is harm reduction first, then abstinence when you’re ready.

Will I be on medication forever?

Not necessarily. Some patients taper off medication after 1-2 years. Others stay on long-term maintenance. Both approaches are valid. We make decisions based on your individual situation.

Can I get treatment if I’ve relapsed before?

Yes. Relapse is common in addiction recovery. It doesn’t mean treatment failed. It means we need to adjust the plan. We don’t give up on patients who relapse.

What if I’m on probation or parole?

We can provide documentation for court-mandated treatment. Let us know your legal situation during your first appointment.

Do you provide detox services?

We provide outpatient medication management for withdrawal symptoms. For severe alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal, we refer to medical detox programs for safety.

Can family members be involved in treatment?

Yes, with your permission. Family therapy and education can support your recovery.
